8A.2 Assigning oxidation numbers Flashcards

1
Q

what are the rules that help us caculate the oxidasation number

A
  1. the oxidation number of an uncombined species is zero
  2. the sum of the oxidation numbers of all elements in a neutral compound is zero
  3. the sum of the oxidation number of all the elements in an ion is equal to the charge of the ion
  4. the more electronegative element is given a negative oxidation number
  5. F oxidation number is always 1-
  6. the oxidation number of hydrogen is 1+ unless it is combined with a less electronegative element then it would be 1-
  7. the oxidation number of oxygen is -2 unless in a peroxide which it’ll be -1, and when it is combined with F it would be 1+
