8A.2 Assigning oxidation numbers Flashcards
1
Q
what are the rules that help us caculate the oxidasation number
A
- the oxidation number of an uncombined species is zero
- the sum of the oxidation numbers of all elements in a neutral compound is zero
- the sum of the oxidation number of all the elements in an ion is equal to the charge of the ion
- the more electronegative element is given a negative oxidation number
- F oxidation number is always 1-
- the oxidation number of hydrogen is 1+ unless it is combined with a less electronegative element then it would be 1-
- the oxidation number of oxygen is -2 unless in a peroxide which it’ll be -1, and when it is combined with F it would be 1+
2
Q
what is a peroxide
A
any of a class of chemical compounds in which two oxygen atoms are linked together
3
Q
what is the oxidation number
A
a charge an ion has, or a charge it would have if the pieces were fully ionic
