8B.1 Trends in group 1 and 2 Flashcards
1
Q
what is the frist ionisation energy
A
it is the amount of energy required to remove an electron from each atom in a one-mole gaseous atom to form a 1 mole 1+ ION
2
Q
what is the second ionization energy
A
the amount of energy required to remove an electron from every singly charge ion from a 1 mole 1+ gaseous ion to a 1 mole 2+ gaseous
3
Q
what should be considered when talking about the trends in ionization energy
A
1, the nuclear charge
- the orbital in which the electron exists
- the shielding effect
4
Q
what happens to the ionization energies as you go down groups 1 and 2
A
- the nuclear charge increases meaning that the outermost electrons would be pulled closer towards the nucleus making the ionization energy increase
- the more shells added the more energy the outter most electrons would have
- the more full inner shells added the more electron to electron repulsion lowering the ionization energy
the second and the third factor are more significant than the first factor giving us the tern of decreasing ionization energy down the group
