Q

what should be considered when talking about the trends in ionization energy

A

1, the nuclear charge

  1. the orbital in which the electron exists

Q

what happens to the ionization energies as you go down groups 1 and 2

A
  1. the nuclear charge increases meaning that the outermost electrons would be pulled closer towards the nucleus making the ionization energy increase
  2. the more shells added the more energy the outter most electrons would have
  3. the more full inner shells added the more electron to electron repulsion lowering the ionization energy

the second and the third factor are more significant than the first factor giving us the tern of decreasing ionization energy down the group
