1.blocks the action of aldehyde dehydrogenase leads to build up of acetaldehyde in the body and makes the person feel sick. Stops drinkers drink because of how ill they will get.
2.antagonist for glutamate. suppresses glutamate activity which is hyperactive during withdrawal. This lessens the aversiveness of withdrawal lowering the motivation to take alcohol
3. opioid receptor antagonist

a. reduces the normal level of intoxication
