Q

Absorption is slowed by?? (3)

A
  1. food : digestion process keeps food in the stomach for a set amount of time before moving on….slows down alcohol absorption
  2. H2-receptor antagonists (ranitidine or zantac) reduce alcohol dehydrogenase levels. (alcohol will have an increased affect)
  3. Gender: woman have less alcohol dehydrogenase in the stomach; higher BAC per unit

Q

Absorption is increased by? (3)

A
  1. carbonation: expands stomach lining making it easier for things to pass through aka increases surface area
  2. concentration (to a point) most rapid absorption occurs at about 80 proof (40% ethanol) (1/2% = proof aka proof = 2x%)
  3. expectancy also plays a factor….those that expect to drink alcohol reached higher BAC than those that did not expect.
