Chapter 6: Absorption of Ethanol Flashcards
0
Q
First pass metabolism occurs in the stomach, does what to alcohol?
A
-alcohol in the stomach is exposed to high concentration of alcohol dehydrogenase the main enzyme that breaks down alcohol…
1
Q
Ethanol cannot be _____; ph of diluent has no effect on ___.
A
ionized, absorption
2
Q
Absorption is slowed by?? (3)
A
- food : digestion process keeps food in the stomach for a set amount of time before moving on….slows down alcohol absorption
- H2-receptor antagonists (ranitidine or zantac) reduce alcohol dehydrogenase levels. (alcohol will have an increased affect)
- Gender: woman have less alcohol dehydrogenase in the stomach; higher BAC per unit
3
Q
Absorption is increased by? (3)
A
- carbonation: expands stomach lining making it easier for things to pass through aka increases surface area
- concentration (to a point) most rapid absorption occurs at about 80 proof (40% ethanol) (1/2% = proof aka proof = 2x%)
- expectancy also plays a factor….those that expect to drink alcohol reached higher BAC than those that did not expect.
