Chapter 11 Key Terms Flashcards
Adverse reaction
undesirable reaction to contrast media that may be harmful to the patient
Anaphylactic
manifesting extremely great sensitivity to foreign material
High-osmolality contrast media (HOCM)
contrast media that has an osmolality greater than human plasma
Hydrophilicity
a tendency of the blood and tissues to absorb fluid
Hyperosmolar
a solution that has higher osmotic concentration of particles in solution as compared to blood plasma
Hypertonic
the same as hyperosmolar; when a fluid is hypertonic, it will create dehydration
Iso-osmolar
having the same osmolality as another fluid; in this case, any contrast that has the same osmolality as human plasma
Low-osmolality contrast media (LOCM)
contrast media that has osmolality that is closer to that of human blood plasma
Miscibility
capable of being mixed with some other fluid and remaining mixed
Osmolality
the concentration of a solution expressed in weight of the molecule in solution
Persistence
in terms of contrast media, it means the ability of the contrast to stay in the body
Side effect
an unintended reaction to contrast media that is of little or no consequence
Tonicity
the osmotic pressure of a solution relative to that of blood
Toxicity
the state of being poisonous
Viscosity
the resistance of flow (the thickness of a material)
