BWS / Night flight & Task Flashcards
If IMC conditions are entered with the search or landing light on ____ may occur
Spatial disorientation
During IIMC, NVGs may allow the pilot to ____
See through thin obstrurations
and therefore it may not be beneficial to remove them once in stabile IMC flight
NVG consideration
Aborted takeoff
Due to limited field of view, avoid making abrupt changes in aircraft attitude.
nose high limit forward field of view
NVG consideration
Go around
- Obs avoid excesive nose high = limited fwd. view
- Scanning techniques
- Treat visual obstacles (eg. shadows ) as physical obstacles.
NVG consideration
Altitude selection NVG flight
- Find highest point within 1000m of each side of the route leg
- Multiply by 3.28
- Round up to nearest 50’
- Add 100’ for vegetation
- NVG add 80’ for obstacle clearance
Preflight - NVG considerations
- Use white light. Colored light may make oil and hydraulic leaks unvisible
- Ensure all lighting is operational
- Crew on flightline should wear appropriate lighting
- Pay particular attention to the structural components during preflight
Plan a VFR flight - NVG considerations
More detailed planning necessary due to visibility restrictions - CP used for day may not work for night
What is the procedure when experiencing NVG/ANVIS failure at NOE / contour flight ?
- A - T - T - A (react to anvis failure)
- P* will initiate a climb at a rate that will endure obstacle avoidance
Low level and higher altitudes do not require a climb
Why can NVG navigation with standard maps be difficult ?
Due to the map colors and symbologies used
Terrain flight deceleration - NVG considerations
- Limited field of view = avoid abrupt changes in attitude
- Maintain scanning techniques to ensure obstacle avoidance and tail rotor clearance
LZ/PZ/HA selection for nights - consideration
The required area is larger at night compared to day
The quality of depth perception at night for a given situation can depend on ____ ?
4 answers - these are some of the factors - not all and the only factors
- Avialiable lighting
- Type and quality of NVG
- Degree of contrast in the FOV
- User experience
The aircrew must often rely on ____ cues
Monocular
Why are binocular cues to little (no) use for the crew at night ?
Because the cues rely on the eyes viewing objects from different angles - The object need to be close for this to happen.
Flying at night, the distances to the objects are so great that these cues have almost no value to the crew.
