blood cells Flashcards
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells- are made in the bone marrow
Carry oxygen from the lungs through the blood to all body cells
Erythrocytes (red blood cells)
Process where by complex neutrients are broken down into simpler substances and energy is released
catabolism
break down of catabolism
Cata - down
bol - means to cast
ism - is a process
Hemoglobin
an important protein in erythrocytes, carried oxygen through the bloodstream
Leukocytes
White blood cells, their are 5 types
Name two types Leukocytes
Granulocytes and Mononuclear
Three types of Granulocytes
Eosinophils
Basophils
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
granules stain red - eosino=rosie- increased in number when allergic conditions such as asthma
Basophils
Granules stain blue - function unknown - numbers increase in healing inflammation
Neutrophils
granules stained pale purple - most important disease fighting cells and most numberous.
Two Types of Mononuclear cells
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Mononuclear
have one larhe necleus and only a few granules, produced in bone marrow
Lymphocytes
fight disease by producing antibodies, thereby destroying foreign cells
Monocytes
(one large neucleus) engluf and destroy celluar debris after neutrophils have attacked foreign cells
