It is a distension of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa

Primary
Secondary
What is a primary baker’s cyst due to?
No underlying cause
What is a secondary baker’s cyst due to?
Underlying condition
–Osteoarthritis
–Meniscal tears
How can a baker’s cyst present?
As a swelling in the popliteal fossa behind the knee.
What other ways can a baker’s cyst present?
Pain or discomfort
Fullness
Pressure
A palpable lump or swelling
Restricted range of motion in the knee (with larger cysts)
What makes a baker’s cyst more apparent?
Patient standing with leg’s extended
What can happen to the baker’s cyst?
It can rupture
What can a ruptured cyst present similarly to?
a DVT presentation
How can a ruptured baker’s cyst present?
Pain
Swelling
Erythema
How can a baker’s cyst be diagnosed?
Ultrasound
Can also rule out DVT
How is a baker’s cyst managed?
Asymptomatic- do nothing
Symptomatic- Ultrasound-guided aspiration
