Osteoporotic, elderly females
What is a major risk if someone has a hip fracture?
Avascular necrosis
What are the main features of a hip fracture?
Pain
Shortened and externally rotated leg
When might a patient with a hip fracture be able to weight bear?
If they have a non-displaced or incomplete neck of femur fractures
What are the 2 locations of hip fractures?
Intracapsular (subcapital)
Etracapsular
What is an intracapsular hip fracture?
From the edge of the femoral head to the insertion of the capsule of the hip join
What is an extracapsular hip fracture?
Either be trochanteric or subtrochanteric
What is system is used to classify hip fractures?
Garden classificaiton system
What is a Type 1 Garden fracture?
Stable fracture with impaction in valgus
What is a Type 2 Garden fracure?
Complete fracture but undisplaced
What is a Type 3 Garden fracure?
Displaced fracture, usually rotated and angulated, but still has boney contact
What is a Type 4 Garden fracure?
Complete boney disruption
What is the management of an intracapsular undisplaced fracture?
Internal fixation
or
Hemiarthroplasty if unfit
What is the management of a displaced intracapsular fracture?
Replacement arthroplasty (total hip replacement or hemiarthroplasty)
What is the management of an extracapsular stable intertrochanteric fracture?
Dynamic hip screw
