What is Avascular Necrosis?
Death of bone due to lack of blood supply
What does Avascular Necrosis affect?
Epiphysis of long bones such as the femur.
What is the main cause of Avascular Necrosis?
Long term use of corticosteroids
What are the other possible causes of Avascular necrosis?
- Sickle cell anaemia
- Alcohol
- Trauma
- Previous chemotherapy
How does Avascular necrosis present?
- Pain in both hips
- Impaired mobilisation
- Reduced range of motion
What range of motion is reduced with Avascular necrosis?
Internal rotation
What exacerbates avascular necrosis?
Stairs

How is Avascular Necrosis diagnosed?
MRI
Why is an x-ray for Avascular necrosis not that useful in diagnosis?
It shows up late presentation
What late presentation might you see on an x-ray in someone with Avascular Necrosis?
Crescent shape- Collapse of the articular surface
What is the management of Avascular Necrosis?
Joint replacement
