7.2 Physiology of the Integumentary System Flashcards
What is the smallest until of life?
cell
What are tissues?
collection of cells that are similar in structure and function
What are tissues comprised of?
cells and a matrix
What is matrix also known as?
extracellular material
What is a matrix typically composed of?
ground substance
protein
collagen fibers
What needs to be repaired when skin is damaged?
tissue and matrix
Why does the body need to respond quickly to skin damage?
prevent blood loss and entrance of microorganisms
What forms a clot?
blood platelets from the damaged blood vessel accumulate in the area where it was damaged
What does the clot secrete?
a mesh like substance it help prevent blood loss
What do mast cells release?
histamine
What is the function of histamine?
helps dilate blood vessels to bring increase blood and nutrients to the injured area
What do histamines help initiate?
inflammatory response
What does the inflammatory response do?
signals other cells in the area to help remove foreign pathogens
What are macrophages?
white blood cells that work to engulf and destroy disease causing pathogens
What do fibroblasts do in time of injury?
secrete new collagen in the shape of the old tissue to support the matrix until new cells are formed
