4.2 Anatomy of the Skeleton Part II: The Appendicular Skeleton Flashcards
What is the appendicular skeleton?
consists of the bones of the pectoral and pelvic girdles and the attached limbs
What are the pectoral girdle and upper limbs specialized for?
flexibility and increased range of motion
What are the pelvic girdles and lower limbs specialized for?
strength
What is the pectoral girdle composed of?
two clavicles and two scapulae
Where do the clavicles connect?
sternum anteriorly
Where do the scapulae connect?
to the sternum posteriorly
Which part of the pectoral girdle is freely movable?
scapula
How is the scapula physically connected?
by muscles and ligaments
What does the posterior side of the scapula contain?
supraspinatus fossa
infraspinatus fossa
scapular spine
Where is the acromion process located?
projects from the scapular spine connects to the clavicle anteriorly
What contains the glenoid cavity?
the neck of the scapula
What is the glenoid cavity?
where the head of the humerus articulates with the scapula
What does the anterior of the scapula contain?
subscapular fossa
Where is the coracoid process located?
projects anteriorly from the scapula
What is the purpose of the coracoid process?
allows for muscle attachment
