7.1 Anatomy of the Integumentary System Part 4 Flashcards
What does the reticular region of the dermis contain?
main blood supply for the skin
What is a bruise also known as?
contusion
What is a bruise?
damage to a blood vessel in the dermis layer
What is the hypodermis mainly composed of?
fat cells (adipocytes)
What are the two layers of the hypodermis?
subcutaneous fay layer
subcutaneous tissue
What is the function of the hypodermis?
anchor the dermis to a layer of fat cells
What do the fat cells of the skin do?
help regulate body temperature and protect deeper tissues and organs from injury
What does a subcutaneous injection mean?
medication or vaccination is given in a needle the reaches the dermis but superficial to the muscle (it reaches the hypodermis)
What is one reason to give a subcutaneous injection?
absorbed slower than if given direct into a vein
What is a dermatome?
region of skin innervated by one sensory nerve
How are sensory signals sent?
from the skin to the spinal nerve to the spinal cord to the brain
What is each region of skin innervated by except the face?
spinal nerve
What is the face skin innervated by?
cranial nerve five: trigeminal nerve
What are the two parts of hair?
root and shaft
Where does the root of hair begin?
hair bulb in the dermis
