6.1 Anatomy of the Endocrine System Part 3 Flashcards
How are most hormones controlled?
negative feedback
What is homeostasis?
maintaining the body at its set-point
How does the body maintain homeostasis?
negative feedback of hormones
What is an example of a hormone controlled by negative feedback?
ADH = antidiuretic hormone
What is the action of ADH?
dilute the blood
What occurs once the hypothalamus senses that the blood is dilute enough?
it shutoffs the release of ADH
What is positive feedback?
enhances of increases the amount of a hormone that is regulated
What is an example of a hormone that undergoes positive feedback?
oxytocin
What is oxytocin involved in?
child birth; causes the uterus to contract
How does positive feedback work with oxytocin?
uterine contraction causes the release of more oxytocin which causes even more uterine contraction
