Yr8-Digestive System Flashcards
When does your stomach let you know when you need to eat?
When it starts to rumble
How does your body get nutrients?
By the digestive system
Where does the food enter your body?
In your mouth.
What breaks down the food in your mouth?
Enzymes
What happens to big chunks of food?
It digests snd gets smaller which absorb into your blood.
Name all the organs needed for the digestive system.
Mouth Oesophagus Stomach Liver Pancreas Gall bladder Small intestine Large intestine Rectum Anus
Give the function of a mouth
To physically digest by the teeth with chemical digestion with enzymes in saliva
Give the function of the oesophagus
A tube that carries the food down in a movement called ‘peristalsis’
Give the function of the stomach
A muscular sac that can hold acid by its strong layer. Food is mixed with hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes which churn the food
Give the function of a liver.
Produces a green substance called bile that neutralises the stomach acid and helps break down fat into tiny droplets.
Give the function of the pancreas
A gland (leaf-shaped) below the stomach that produces more digestive enzymes that break down food even more
Give a function of the gall bladder
It sores and releases bile into the small intestine.
Give a function of the small intestine
Long thin tube that food moves through after the stomach. Digested food is absorbed into the blood stream. More enzymes break down. The blood transports nutrients into the body cells.
Give the function of the large intestine
Water is reabsorbed back into the blood stream. The undigested goes to the rectum.
Give a function of the rectum
Lower part of the large intestine, where undigested food (poo) is stored before it leaves the body.
