Y10 The Heart Flashcards
What type of muscle is the heart made of?
Heart muscle/cardiac muscle
What supplies blood to the cardiac muscle?
Coronary arteries
Where does the blood enter the heart?
The atria
Where does the blood coming into the right atrium come from, and what kind of blood is it?
Vena cava, deoxygenated blood
Where does the blood coning into the left atrium come from, and what kind of blood is it?
Pulmonary vein, oxygenated blood
What do the ventricles do?
Comtract to force blood out of the heart?
Where does the blood from the right ventricle go, and what kind of blood is it?
Pulmonary artery, deoxygenated blood
Where does the blood from the left ventricle go, and what kind of blood is it?
Aorta (largest artery in the body), oxygenated blood
What is the purpose of the valves?
To stop the backflow of blood
Why is the muscle wall thicker in the left ventricle?
To develop the pressure needed to force the blood through the arterial system
Where does blood on the right side of the heart go?
To the lungs
Where does blood on the left side of the heart go?
All around the body
Where is the natural pacemaker?
In the right atrium
Why do people need replacement valves?
To replace leaky or stiff valves that don’t allow proper blood flow or allow backflow of blood.
