Year 8-Displacement Reactions/metals+acid+water+oxygen Flashcards
When you react metals with acids, what happens?
If the metal is more reactive, it will displace it.
What is displace?
Displacing is when a metal takes out an element
What is the reactivity series?
Whether they are more reactive or less reactive?
Reactivity series
Please-Potassium Stop-sodium Calling-calcium ----------------React with water Me-magnesium A-aluminium Careless-carbon Zebra-zinc Instead-iron Try-tin Learn-lead --------------React with acids How-hydrogen Copper-copper Saves-silver --------------React with oxygen Gold-gold
Metal + acid=
Salt+hydrogen
Metal+nitric acid= metal nitrate + hydrogen
Metal+hydrochloric acid= metal chloride +hydrogen
Metal+sulphuric acid=metal sulphate + hydrogen
Metal + oxygen=
Metal oxide
Metal+water=
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
How do you test for hydrogen?
Collect the gas, heat it with a splint and if it pops it is hydrogen gas.
What can metals and acids help with vets?
They can see what went into the animal’s tummy
Does gold react?
No
Why can gold be used for connectors?
Because the heat won’t force it to react with oxygen as it doesn’t react
Give 2 state symbols
S-solid
G-gas
L-liquid
Describe the reaction between metals and acids?
Some are vigorous, most are calm
Describe metals with oxygen
Most burn vigorously
Why is it good to have copper heating pipes?
Because the copper pipes don’t react with water when heated.
