Y8 Germination Flashcards
How is a seed made?
It is made when the nucleus of a pollen grains enters the ovaries of the stigma and has combined the D.N.A of the pollen to the ovule.
How does a seed get out of the ovaries?
It can get out by wind, hand-picking, falling etc…
What right conditions are needed for the plant to successfully go through germination?
It needs to have water, oxygen and warmth.
When it is winter will the seeds germinate?
No. It has no warmth.
How do gardeners keep seeds growing in winter?
They use a green house which traps warm air in.
A plant can’t get light while it is still at the beginning stage so it has something in it that provides the food.
What is it called?
A food starch provides the food
When will the seed not need to rely on its food starch?
When the leaves and shoot come out and can rely on photosynthesis.
What is the part of the seed called where the stalk grows?
The embryo
What is the coating of the seed called?
The seed coat.
Do plants physically have sexual activity?
No. Wind or insects can take them.
If you tried to germinate a seed with oil, will it grow?
No. It is not water and oil prevents oxygen from getting into the seed.
What does the seed start to produce as it grows?
Roots and the main shoot.
Can seeds send out pollen grains or receive them?
No, it is not formed and cannot have photosynthesis.
Potatoes grow under the ground. This means that they cannot receive pollen or produce more seeds.
Is this statement right.
No. The potato itself is an ovary and the seeds can form in there.
What are the 5 stages of germination?
Pollination Fertilisation Seed Formation Seed Dispersal Germination
