The Hitler Youth
1) It was founded in 1926
2) Boys aged fourteen and over were recruited to the movement
3) They were given high quality brown-shirt uniforms and were prepared to join the military
4) It became compulsory in 1936 and lasted until 1945
6) They marched and did exercises after school
7) There were camping trips and excursions available
Why did the boys join?
Some who took part said the organization made them feel valued and encouraged a sense of responsibility. It was also compulsory. If you were a good enough pupil, you could be sent to a Hitler school to be trained as a loyal Nazi leader.
The League of German Maidens
1) The female branch of the Hitler Youth
2) Aimed at girls aged fourteen to eighteen
3) They were trained to do domestic tasks like sewing and cooking
4) They also did trips and camping
How did the Nazis change education?
1) Teachers were greeted with ‘Sieg Heil’ and the children studied extracts from Hitlers biography ‘Mein Kampf’
2) Biology was taught with focus on eugenics, race theory and social darwinism
3) Geography was all about the Nazi idea of Lebensraum and that all Germanic territories were taken away by the ToV (1919)
4) History was re-interpreted to focus on the Aryan master race, it’s superiority in the past and Hitler’s role in the Nazi revolution.
