The Sudeten Crisis and Czechoslovakia Flashcards
What did Hitler do in 1938
He turned his attention to the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.
Context
Czechoslovakia’s borders had been set by the Treaty of Versailles-the Sudetenland was a western area with a minority population of about 3 million Germans.
What was Hitler’s excuse?
He claimed that the Czechoslovakian government was discriminating against Germans in the Sudetenland-the Nazis demanded it should become a part of Germany.
What did Hitler do in May 1938?
He moved his armies to the border of Czechoslovakia and threatened to take control of the Sudetenland. The Czechoslovakian leader, Benes, was ready to fight. Britain, France, and the USSR had agreed to support the Czechoslovakians in the case of a war.
What had Hitler promised Neville Chamberlain?
That the Nazis would not invade Czechoslovakia.
The Munich Agreement
After a series of negotiations with Hitler, Chamberlain decided to give Czechoslovakia to Hitler. After all, his territorial requests until this point had been very reasonable.
