What sparked it?
A group of nationalist right-wing generals, including general Franco, staged an attempted coup against the left-wing Spanish republic.

The Republicans (Spain) and the Nationalists (General Franco)
What led to it?
It was a domestic affair as a result of an ethnically, racially, religiously, politically, and ideologically divided country.
Who fought in Spain?
The Front Republican Government and the Spanish Fascist Party
What did France do?
They sent war goods to Spain to aid the Republican government
What did Britain do?
Stanley Baldwin pressured the French Prime Minister Leon Blum to abstain from getting involved via the non-intervention treaty of August 1936. He did this to avoid a Bolshevik-style revolution and communism. The treaty was signed by France, Germany, Italy and the USSR. However, Hitler and Mussolini broke it and started to support General Franco.
Why did Hitler support General Franco?
Spain would distract Britain and France from witnessing his actions of overturning the ToV
What did Hitler and Mussolini do in October 1936?
They signed the Rome-Berlin axis. This increased tensions in Europe and made Britain, France, and the USSR very suspicious.
