The Anglo-German Naval Agreement Flashcards
What did Hitler do in regard to rearmament?
He had begun rebuilding the German Navy and launched a new variant of U-boat in 1935. This was a severe violation of the ToV.
What did Britain decide?
That they would pursue a naval pact with Germany to regulate the future growth of the German navy.
When was it signed?
18th June 1935
What did it agree?
1) Germany was allowed to rebuild their navy
2) Germany’s navy would not exceed 35% of the tonnage of the Royal Navy
3) They would be allowed 45% as many submarines as Britain
4) They would not threaten Britain from the west
What did other countries think?
Other countries were angry that Chamberlain had not considered the impacts on other countries. Britain’s navy was the biggest in the world. This meant Germany’s navy was small when compared to Britain, but large compared to other countries.
What were the consequences?
The Stresa front was broken. This also triggered Mussolini’s invasion of Abyssinia. Britain had sympathy for the German situation. Britain also signed it because Germany acted as a buffer against communism.
