What had Hitler previously done in regard to rearmament?
He had left the Geneva Disarmament Conference in 1933 and the League itself in the same year.
Why did he rearm secretly?
He wanted to strengthen Germany but could also not risk provoking a response by openly contravening the ToV.
What did he do in March 1935?
He openly proclaimed to the world that he was breaking the disarmament clauses of the ToV by reintroducing conscription and created the Luftwaffe.
What happened in April 1935?
Laval (France), Macdonald (UK) and Mussolini (Italy) formed the Stresa Front in response to Hitler’s rearmament. Here they stated that they would put in great efforts to prohibit Germany from further breaking the ToV.
What happened in May 1935
The Franco-Soviet Treaty of Mutual Assistance (May 1935) was signed with the aim of enveloping Nazi Germany and stopping Hitler’s aggression
What did this mean for Hitler?
He had gotten away with his first gamble, but war was brewing across Europe due to his subsequent actions.
