The collapse of the League of Nations Flashcards
Impact of the Depression (1929)
Made the political situation tougher worldwide and weakened the League.
Countries role in the failure
They were so busy dealing with their own problems that they couldn’t focus on resolving international disputes and arbitration.
What could the League not have done?
Stop leaders like Hitler and Mussolini peacefully
The main problem with the League
The League did not have the power or military strength to show a strong response to aggressors because no members wanted to commit troops after WWI.
Who wasn’t dealt with correctly?
Leaders e.g. Mussolini
What did the members not abide by?
They did not abide by the Covenant. When challenged they would simply leave, such as Japan after the Manchurian crisis of 1931.
What did they allow?
No cooperation and old alliances to creep back
What were the League’s aims?
To act against aggression, arbitrate, settle disputes and encourage peace and disarmament
What key event showed that these measures failed?
World War II
Why was the League frowned upon from the start by some?
It defended the Treaty of Versailles (which some members such as Germany thought was unfair)
What impact did the USA not being in the League have?
Britain and France were left with the difficult task of supporting the League of Nations (military and finance) as they were weak themselves
Impact of the organisation of the League?
Made decision making complicated. It was a long, hard process to get stuff done.
