How Hitler becomes Chancellor of the Weimar Republic Flashcards
Hindenburg’s situation (November 1932)
1) After the election of November 1932 Hindenburg was forced to reckon with the Nazi party as they represented over 1/3 of the German people-but at the same time he didn’t trust Hitler.
2) Von Papen actually suggested that Hindenburg might abolish the Weimar constitution and set up a new right-wing elitist government to ban the Communists and the Nazis, but Von Schleicher argued against this, saying the Reichswehr couldn’t fight both the KPD and the NSDAP successfully.
The Scheming of Von Papen and von Schleicher
1) Hindenburg was convinced in December 1932 by scheming Von Schleicher to drop Von Papen as chancellor and make himself the new one.
2) Von Papen began his own scheming and after a secret meeting with Hitler he convinced Hindenburg to make Hitler chancellor, saying he could control him. Von Papen felt he could do this by limiting the number of Nazis in the cabinet to three (Hugenburg and Goering).
Hitler becomes chancellor
On 30th January 1933 Adolf Hitler was sworn into office by Hindenburg and that evening the SA organized a torchlit parade through the Brandenburg gate.
