Structure: the assembly

A

1) Met once a year for each country to vote on a decision
2) Every League member had one vote
3) Controlled the League’s budget and considered general policy

Structure: the council

A

1) Met at least 4 times a year
2) It had permanent members (UK, France, Italy, and Japan) and temporary members.
3) All bodies were compelled to vote, but permanent members could veto council decisions
4) All decisions had to be unanimous-it only took one negative vote to stop a power

A

42 countries joined initially
In the 1930’s, about 60 countries were members (the League was looking quite strong at this point)
The League had a wide range of agencies and commissions

Purpose

A

The covenant established basic moral guidelines for peacekeeping which all members were forced to abide by. Further moral justice included PCIJ (Permanent Council of International Justice) which would:

1) Who was right
2) Tell a country it was doing wrong
3) Impose economic sanctions upon the aggressor (military in extreme cases)

The League and collective security

A

The League didn’t have an army, instead it relied on the idea of collective security (that other countries would provide military/naval/air force services)
