Reactions to the Versailles Settlement Flashcards
1
Q
Reactions of the German people
A
German politicians were shocked by the Treaty because they were expecting a fair one based on Wilson’s 14 points. This caused a mass protest outside the Reichstag buildings in 1919. From then on, the settlement was referred to as ‘Diktat’ (harsh). The Treaty humiliated them by suggesting they had lost the war (they thought the hadn’t been defeated yet) and so the German people were generally angry for having to take the blame for WWI.
