The Disarmament conference Flashcards
Basis
Hitler had come to power in the midst of the World Disarmament conference in Geneva (1933) and secretly started rearming Germany
What did Hitler want?
Hitler thought it was unfair that Germany was not allowed armed forces and told Britain that the only way he would not rearm was if Britain and France agreed to as well.
What did France, Poland and Czechoslovakia think of this?
They were all very concerned
What did Britain do?
They put forward an ambitious disarmament plan at the conference. However, Hitler used the hesitancy of France to pull Germany out of the conference in 1933 and subsequently do the same for the League of Nations.
What did Hitler do from 1933-1935?
He continued secretly rearming Germany. In 1936, evidence started springing up out of nowhere that he was doing this. Hitler also knew that by leaving the League, he was further weakening the international organization of peace, a construct of the ToV.
