Week 6 - Malabsorption Syndrome Flashcards
what is malabsorption syndrome
- any disease that results from impaired absorption of fats, carbs, proteins, minerals, and vitamins
list 5 possible causes of malabsorption syndrome
- biochemical or enzyme deficiency
- bacterial proliferation
- disruption of small intestine mucosa
- disturbed lymphatic or vascular circulation
- SA loss (decreased villi)
what is the most common malabsorption disorder
- lactose intolerance
list 4 other types of malabsorption disorder
- IBD
- celiac disease
- tropical sprue
- cystic fibrosis
what is celiac disease
- an autoimmune disorder against a protein fragment found in gluten leading to attack of the small intestine
list 4 symptoms of celiac disease
- vitamin deficiencies
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain & cramping
- bloating with abdominal distension
what causes malabsorption & vitamin deficiencies in celiac disease
- inflammation & villous atrophy
describe diarrhea in celiac disease
- pale
- voluminous
- abnormally odorous
list 2 diagnostic studies for celiac disease
- endoscopy
- antibody blood test
what is the only effective therapy for celiac disease
- gluten avoidance
what is lactase deficiency? what does this result in?
- a condition in which the lactase enzyme is deficient or absent
- results in inability to break down lactose
list 5 symptoms of lactase deficiency
- abdominal bloating & cramps
- flatulence
- diarrhea
- NV
- borborygmi
what is borborygmi
- lots of BS
list 3 diagnostic studies for lactase deficiency
- breath
- blood
- stool tests
describe how the blood test for lactase deficiency works
- lactose is broken down into galactose & glucose
- therefore, we can check BG
- if after consumption of 75 g lactose, if the BG rises, you get increased BG & lactase is present
list 2 types of treatment for lactase deficiency
- lactose avoidance
- lactase supplementation
