Week 10 - Strains & Sprains Flashcards
what is a sprain
- damage to one or more ligaments in a joint
what is a sprain often caused by
- trauma
- the joint being taken beyond its functional range of motion
what are the classifications of sprains
- first degree
- second degree
- third degree
what is a first degree sprain
- when the fibers of the ligament are stretched but intact
what is a second degree sprain
- a tear of part of the ligament
what is a third degree sprain
- complete rupture of a ligament
- sometimes avulsing a piece of bone
where are 5 common locations of sprains
- ankle
- knee
- fingers
- wrist
- toes
what is the most common location of a sprain
- the ankle
what does an ankle sprain often involve
- the anterior talofibular ligament
what is a common cause of an ankle sprain
- inversion injury
what ligament does a knee sprain often involve (3)
- the anterior cruciate ligament
- may include the medial co-lateral ligmament
- or the meical miniscus
what are 5 signs of sprains
- pain
- swelling
- bruising
- decreased ability to move the limb
- cracking
what causes a cracking sound w sprains
- if a ligament ruptures
what is a strain
- an acute or chronic soft tissue injury that occurs to a muscle, tendon, or both
what are causes of acute strains
- more closely associated w recent mechanical trauma or injury
what is the cause of chronic strains
- repititive movement of the muscles & tendons over a long period of time
what are the classifications of strains
- first degree
- second degree
- third degree
what is a first degree strain (3)
- little tissue tearing
- mild tenderness
- pain w full range of motion
what is a second degree strain
- torn muscle or tendon tissue
what is a third degree strain
- severe tear
- little or no movement
what are 5 signs of a strain
- pain
- contusion
- functional loss of involved structure
- muscle weakness
- localizaed inflammation
what is the treament for sprains & strains
"RICE" Rest Ice Compression Elevation
+ protection
what is the most common medical treatment for strains & sprains
- NSAIDs
