Vascular Flashcards
What is carotid endarterectomy?
A procedure to treat carotid artery disease to remove the fatty deposits narrowing the artery.
What is coronary artery disease?
Damage or disease in the heart’s major blood vessels, usually caused by a build-up of plaque.
Carotid-subclavian bypass

What is a haemangioma?
A non-cancerous tumour derived from blood vessels, commonly presenting as birthmarks.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
TBC
What program do the vascular team use for handover?
Oacis.
What is an aneurysm?
A dilatation in the wall of an artery supplying blood to a specific area.
What are 7 symptoms of an aneurysm?
- Pain
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rapid heart rate
- Low blood pressure
- Shock
What is an endarectomy?
Surgical procedure to remove the plaque in arteries that obstructs blood flow, causing heart disease.
What is angiography?
Angiography or arteriography is a medical imaging technique used for the inside (lumen) of blood vessels and organs of the body, particularly the arteries, veins, and heart chambers.
What is peripheral vascular disease?
A circulatory condition in which narrowed blood vessels reduce blood flow to the limbs.
What is carotid artery stenosis?
Narrowing of the large arteries on either side of the neck.
What is a consideration with blood thinners in patients who have had an aneurysm?
This increases the risk of aneurysm rupture
If a patient has a stent, what should you always question?
How long ago the stent was inserted.
What do Sequential Compression Devices do?
They are a method of DVT prophylaxis that improve blood circulation in the legs. They wrap around the legs and inflate one at a time.
What is calciphylaxis?
A serious, uncommon disease in which calcium accumulates in small blood vessels of the fat and skin tissues.
What are the complications of calciphylaxis?
Calciphylaxis causes blood clots, painful skin ulcers and may cause serious infections that can lead to death.
What is extravasation?
When a vesicant drug leaks out of the vein and into the surrounding tissue.
What is a vesicant drug?
Drugs that can result in tissue necrosis or formation of blisters when accidentally infused into tissue surrounding a vein
What is usually the consequence of extravasation?
When this happens, a person will likely experience serious tissue damage, including ulceration and tissue death
What is peripheral vascular disease?
Narrowed blood vessels reducing blood flow to the limbs.
