Valence Electrons Flashcards
What are Valence Electrons?
Electrons in the outermost energy levels.
How can you determine the amount of Valence Electrons from Groups?
The amount of valence electrons is the same as the group number.
What is the Octet Rule?
A chemical rule of thumb that states that atoms of main-group elements tend to combine in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas.
What is the Duet Rule?
A chemical rule of thumb for Lithium and Beryllium. They can’t reach eight electrons, so they drop until they reach 8 instead of adding.
What are Cations?
Cations are positive ions.
What is an Anion?
Anions are negative ions.
What are the rules for Metals?
Metals lose electrons. Loss equals group number.
What are the rules of Nonmetals?
Nonmetals gain electrons. Gain equals group number.
