Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
What is Oxidation?
A
- can be visualized as the loss of hydrogen (H2) or the gain of oxygen
2
Q
Oxidation of Alcohols
A
- remove H from OH group and other H from carbon to which OH is connected
- common oxidyizing agent
- K2Cr2O7/H2SO4, hot KMnO4, or CrO3/pyridine
- use [O] to indicate oxidizing reaction conditions
3
Q
Where does the bond have to be?
A
Between the carbon and the oxygen (in alcohols)
4
Q
Reduction of Aldehydes & Ketones
A
- the addition of hydrogen (H2) to the carbonyl group
- an aldehyde yields a primary alcohol
- a ketone yields a secondary alcohol
5
Q
Complete the following oxidation-reduction reaction by selecting the missing molecule.
CH3CH2CH2CH2CHO + H2 ->
A
CH3(CH2)3CH2OH
