Carboxylic Acid - Amide Flashcards
1
Q
Amides
A
- formed from the condensation of an acid and amine
O
||
-C-NH2
- Amides are part acids and part amines
2
Q
Nomenclature of Amides
A
- if two hydrogens are on nitrogen it is a primary amide and is named by dropping the -oic acid and adding -amide
- if the nitrogen is substituted with one or more alkyl groups it is named as in step one and the alkyl groups are indicated as a prefix N-alkyl-
- one alkyl group attached is a secondary amide, two alkyl groups attached is a tertiary amide.
3
Q
Properties of Amides
A
- possess high melting points
- all primary amides are solids at room temperature (except formamide)
- water soluble if total number of carbons is less than 4 atoms.
