Lewis Structure - Exceptions Flashcards

1
Q

What are the Steps for Drawing Lewis Structures?

A
  1. Least electronegative atom is in center.
  2. Hydrogen cannot be central atom.
  3. Determine shared electrons and number of bonds. (shared=need-available, S=N-A).
  4. Positive charge subtract electron from A.
  5. Negative charge add electron to A.
  6. Arrange remainder of electrons to fill octets.
  7. Is there a different possible arrangement that doesn’t affect the structure?

Q

What is Resonance (chemistry)?

A

In chemistry, resonance or mesomerism [1] is a quantum superposition of wave functions built from several contributing structures [2] (also called resonance structures or canonical forms) as a way of describing delocalized electrons within certain molecules or polyatomic ions.
