Hydrocarbons - Aromatic Flashcards
1
Q
What are Aromatic Hydrocarbons?
A
Aromatic hydrocarbons, also called aromatic compounds, are compounds that contain benzene as a part of their structure. Benzene is a cyclic hydrocarbon with the formula C6H6.
2
Q
Characteristics of the Benzene Ring
A
- all carbon bonds are identical in length and strength (not three single or three double as might be expected)
- does not undergo addition reactions (unlike alkenes)

Nomenclature for Aromatic Compounds
A
- add -benzene to the end of everything.
