Solvation - Ionic and Molecular Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
What is Solution Formation?
A
The hydration of ionic compounds, the hydration of other water soluble molecules. Solvation is the term used when solvent is not water.
2
Q
What Factors Influence Solubility?
A
Nature of solute and solvent (like dissolves like). Pressure - no effects on solids and liquids, but does effect gases in liquids.
3
Q
What Factors influence rate of dissolution?
A
Particle size of solid solutes - increases surface area enhances ease of solubilization.
Stirring - no effect on solubility, but does effect rate or ease of solubilization.
Temperature.
4
Q
What are Electrolytes?
A
Solutions that conduct electricity; contain ions.
- Strong electrolytres complete dissociate in water; form ions in solution.
- Ionic compounds are strong electrolytes.
NaCl(s) —> Na+ + Cl-.
- nonelectrolytes - do not conduct electricity
- most molecular compounds are nonelectrolytes; do not dissociate.
