Solvation - Ionic and Molecular Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

What is Solution Formation?

A

The hydration of ionic compounds, the hydration of other water soluble molecules. Solvation is the term used when solvent is not water.

Q

What Factors Influence Solubility?

A

Nature of solute and solvent (like dissolves like). Pressure - no effects on solids and liquids, but does effect gases in liquids.

Q

What Factors influence rate of dissolution?

A

Particle size of solid solutes - increases surface area enhances ease of solubilization.

Stirring - no effect on solubility, but does effect rate or ease of solubilization.

Temperature.

Q

What are Electrolytes?

A

Solutions that conduct electricity; contain ions.

  • Strong electrolytres complete dissociate in water; form ions in solution.
  • Ionic compounds are strong electrolytes.

NaCl(s) —> Na+ + Cl-.

  • nonelectrolytes - do not conduct electricity
  • most molecular compounds are nonelectrolytes; do not dissociate.
