Groups (or Families) are Vertical Columns and Periods are Horizontal Rows.
What is a Distinguishing Electron?
The last electron added to an element. Looking at it can be a useful way of characterizing elements.

Representative.
What type of element is it when all s and p are filled?
Noble Gas.
What type of element is it when the last electron was a d?
Transition.
What type of element is it when the last electron was an f?
Inner Transition.
