Hydrogen Ions and Ion Product Constant Flashcards

Q

What can water do in terms of Ionization?

A

Water can actually undergo Auto-ionization.

HOH(l) = H+(aq) + OH-(aq).

Keq = [H+][OH-] divided by HOH(l).

Kw=[H+][OH-]
Kw=1*10^-14 M^2.

If the exponent is smaller than -7, it is basic. It is acidic otherwise. -4 would be acidic. If it applies to [H+], then these rules are swapped.
