Properties of Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What are Ionic Compounds?
Compounds made of elements that give away or take electrons.
What do Ionic Compounds look like?
They are Crystals and Lattices. They can also be things like cubes.
Why do tight crystals not conduct electricity?
To conduct electricity, there needs to be a free pool of electrons. In a tight crystal, they are all or mostly looked up.
Why do Ionic Compounds have high boiling and melting points?
The atoms are so tightly and uniformly packed together.
How does Ionic Compound Size correlate to boiling and melting points?
Larger Ionic Compounds are easier to pull apart.
What is Lattice Energy?
The Lattice Energy is the strength of the compound in kilo joules per mole.
Why is water not conductive?
By itself, pure water has no ions or minerals for electricity to travel.
