States of Matter and Properties Flashcards
What are the three States of Matter?
Gases, liquids, and solids.
What are the main States of Matter?
Gases, liquids, and solids.
What are the shape characteristics of Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
Gases and Liquids have indefinite shape, Solids have definite shape.
What are the volume characteristics of Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
Gases have indefinite volume, Liquids and Solids have definite volume.
What are the compression characteristics of Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
Gases have high compression, Liquids have low compression, and Solids have very low compression.
What are the thermal expansion characteristics of Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
Gases have moderate thermal expansion, Liquids have small thermal expansion, and Solids have very small thermal expansion.
Why do bridges have Expansion Joints?
Bridges can slightly expand or contract and the Expansion Joints compensate for this.
What are Phase Changes?
Instances where differences in things like temperature cause something to change from a Solid, a Liquid, or a Gas to something else.
What are the two types of Physical Properties?
Extensive and Intensive.
What are Intensive Physical Properties?
Properties that do not depend on the amount of the matter present.
What are Extensive Physical Properties?
Properties that do depend on the amount of matter present.
What are Pure Substances?
Substances where it is just the substance.
