Vaccination and immunity Flashcards
Two types of immunity
Passive and Active
Passive immunity
Given antibodies.
Short term.
Natural passive immunity
Antibodies given by parents from breast milk.
No memory B-cells
Artificial passive immunity
Injected with antibodies.
No Memory B-cells
Active immunity
Body has made antibodies after exposure to a specific antigen.
Long term immunity as it produces memory b-cells
Natural active immunity
Your body creates memory b-cells and antibodies after encountering a disease
Passive active immunity
Vaccination containing antigens
How do you make a pathogen harmless for vaccination
Weakening (heating) - antigens unaffected
Purified antigens ( Removed from pathogen )
Inactive toxins (Toxoids)
Killing (Antigens unaffected)
