Magnification Flashcards
Magnification equation
Magnification = Image size / Actual size

Why does electron microscopes have higher resolution and magnification than light
The wavelength of electrons is short / smaller so their wavelength and magnification is higher OR light has a longer wavelength than electrons
Resolution
The ability to distinguish two adjacent objects as separate points
How does a Transmission Electron microscope work
It works by shooting a beam of electrons at a thin sample and detecting those electrons make it though to the other side
Transmission Electron microscope properties
High magnification and resolution
See internal structure in detail
No colour
2D
Expensive
Only dead cells in a vacuum
How does scanning electron microscope works
Uses BEAMS of electrons to reflect of the structures to develop a 3D Image
Scanning electron microscope properties
High magnification and resolution
3D image
Detailed texture
Expensive
No internal features
No need for thin section
