Enzymes Flashcards
Definition of enzyme
A biological catalyst made from protein that speeds up a reaction without being used up
How do enzymes work
Lower activation energy without being used up
Induced-fit model
The active site of the enzyme slightly changes shape to become a perfect fit to the enzyme and create an enzyme-substrate complex
They key term used to describe a substrate and enzyme coming together
Enzyme-substrate complex
Lock and key model
Enzymes active site is already complimentary to the substrate shape
Competitive enzyme inhibition
Enzyme inhibitor is a similar shape to the substrate so fits to the active site instead of the substrate stopping the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex
Non-competitive enzyme inhibition
Enzyme inhibitor binds to allosteric site . This causes active site to change shape
How to tell if the inhibition is competitive or non competitive by graph
If the enzyme activity increases when you increase the substrate concentration the concentration is competitive
Factors affecting enzyme activity
Enzyme concentration
Substrate concentration
pH
Temperature
