Factors affecting cell membrane Flashcards
What are the two factors that affect cell membrane permeability
Temperature and solvent
How does temperature affect cell membrane
As temperature increases the phospholipids will have more kinetic energy so they move faster making the bilateral less gel-like and more fluid
Permeability of cell membrane below 0 degrees
Phospholipids are are packed closely together and the membrane is rigid .
Chanel and carrier proteins can denature which increase permeability and ice crystals can also form and pierce the membrane making it more permeable when it thaws
Permeability of cell membrane between 0-45 degrees
Phospholipids can move freely and the membrane becomes partially permeable . As temperature increases the kinetic energy increases and makes the membrane more permeable
Permeability above 45 degrees
The phospholipids start to melt and the membrane becomes more permeable . Water inside the cell expands putting pressure on the membrane .Channel proteins and carrier proteins in the membrane denature . This increases the permeability of the membrane
