Genetic diversity Flashcards
Genetic diversity
Differences of DNA that result in different alleles within a population
The greater the genetic diversity
1) The greater number of different alleles possessed by all species
2)The wider range of characteristics
3) The greater probability that the same individuals have a characteristic suiting them to a new environmental condition
4)The more likely for the specie to survive environmental changes
Phenotype advantage
Within a population there will be a gene poll with a variety of wide alleles.
Random mutation to a new allele.
However in some environments it could give individuals advantage over others.
These individuals will be better adapted and more likely to survive than others.
This means theyβre also more likely to reproduce and pass their alleles to their offspring.
New individuals with the advanteous alleles are in turn more likely to survive and reproduce
Over many generations, the frequencies of this allele increases within a population
