Prokaryotic cell structures Flashcards
Pictures of a prokaryotic cell
Capsule
Prevents desiccation, Protects cell from antibiotics and viruses
Capsule
Final outer layer that prevents desiccation, Protects cell from antibiotics and viruses
Ribosomes
70s not 80s
(Smaller)
DNA
In a single circular loop not associated with proteins
Plasmids
Small loops of DNA which can be shared between cells usually containing useful genes
Cell wall PROKARYOTIC
Made of murein - polysaccharide and peptide mix .
Flagellum
Used for locomotion
Membrane infold (mesosome)
Increased surface area for respiration or photosynthesis to take place
Binary fission
Step 1 - DNA and plasmids replicate. Plasmids can be replicated many times
Step 2 - At the same time the cells elongate and as it does so the two DNA molecules go to opposite side
Step 3 - Cytoplasm begins to divide and new cell walls begins to form
Step 4 - The cytoplasm divides to produce to daughter cells. Each contain an identical DNA loop but can contain a rigged number of plasmid copies.
