Urogenital System - Anatomy Flashcards
Where is the renal crest on the kidney?
The space between the medulla and the renal pelvis where the nephrons drain into
What does the ureter do?
Connect the hilus of the kidney with the bladder
What is the epithelium that is in all the bladder tissue?
Transitional epithelium
What is the structure of the ureter?
Inner transitional epithelium
Smooth muscle middle
Outer adventitia -irregular dense connective tissue
What are the 3 regions of the bladder?
Cranial apex - top
Intermediate body
Caudal neck - bottom
How does the ureter enter the bladder?
Enters on the dorsal wall of the bladder and runs through it to the trigone where it exits at an oblique angle
What are the 2 parts of the urethra in males?
Pelvic urethra - over pelvic floor
Penile urethra - inside penis
What is the tissue that surrounds the urethra?
Corpus spongiosum
What is the glans penis?
Expansion around sensitive tip of penis
What is the expanded base of penis called?
Bulb of penis
What is the outer connective tissue layer arounf the corpus spongiosum called?
Tunica albuginea
What is the next layer after the corpus spongiosum called?
The corpus cavernosum
What are the attachments at the base of the penis to the pelvic floor called?
Crura
What is the sheath around the penis called?
The prepuce
Where is the corpus cavernosum found?
Two caverns along the dorsal surface of the penis
What is the muscle that pulls the penis back into the prepuce?
Retractor penis muscle
What is the bone called inside the penis of some animal?
Os penis
What are seminiferous tubules?
Tubes in the testes that contain the germ cells that make sperm
What are Sertoli cells?
Cells that are inside the seminiferous tubules in the testes that aid spermatogenesis
What synthesise testosterone in the testes?
Leydig cells
What is the epididymis?
A highly coiled tube that all the sperm drains into and is stored to become mature
What is the deferent duct?
Transports the sperm to the neck of bladder to enter the urethra
What do male sex accessory glands do?
Make the seminal fluid that the sperm swim in
What are the male sex accessory glands?
Ampulla (ends of the deferent duct)
Vesicular glands
Prostate
Bulbourethral glands
