What is an oocyte?
A cells in the ovary that can meiotically divide to make and ovum
What is an ovum?
An unfertilised egg
What is the uterine tube and what happens here?
The tube between the ovary an the uterine horn. The egg implants here.
What are the uterine horns?
The uterus that forms two horns in other animals to humans
What are the different types of uteri?
Simplex - no horns
Bicornuate - horns
Duplex - 2 cervices
What is the vestibule?
The part of the vagina that is after the external urethral orifice
What are found in the outer cortex of the ovary?
Growing follicles
Corpus luteum - ruptured follicles
What do mature follicles synthesise?
Oestrogen
What do corpus luteum synthesise?
Progesterone
What is the uterine tube made up of?
Ciliated epithelium - waft eggs
Muscle layer
Outer adventitia
What is formed at the end of the uterine tube?
Fimbra - funnel shaped projection that catches the eggs from the ovaries
What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
Endometrium - shed in period
Myometrium - muscle layer that contracts at birth
Perimetrium - outer connective tissue layer
What is the cervix?
Sphincter
Thick muscular layer
