Q

How did protection of economic interests draw the United States into war with Spain?

A

The United States had various economic interests in Cuba. American entrepreneurs had invested $50 million in sugar and rice plantations, tobacco, and other industries in Cuba by the end of the 1800s. Spain ruled Cuba at the time, and ongoing rebellions made Cuba unstable. As tensions grew, President McKinley sent the battleship Maine to Havana to protect American citizens there. When the ship exploded, Americans were angry, and Congress declared war on Spain.

Q

How did alliances cause a chain reaction that led to World War I?

A

Nationalist groups caused ethnic unrest in parts of eastern Europe controlled by Austria-Hungary. One group, the Black Hand, was angered when Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited Bosnia. The group killed the archduke and his wife. Austria-Hungary accused Serbia of being involved and threatened war. Because of alliances, other countries got involved. Russia moved to help Serbia in the pending war, and Germany retaliated by declaring war against Russia and then Russia’s ally, France. Germany invaded Belgium, a neutral country that was the launching ground for Germany’s attack on France. Britain then declared war on Germany because Britain was allied with Belgium. This chain of events led to the beginning of World War I.

Q

Analyze major issues raised by U.S. involvement in World War I. Why were Americans divided over which side to support in World War I? How did Americans react when war against the Central Powers was declared?

A

Americans were divided over the support of the war because there are so many ethnicities represented in America. Many immigrants wanted to support their homeland and relatives still living there. They may also have had grudges against some countries based on their treatment when they lived in their homeland. There were many Americans who supported the war, too. These Americans saw German attacks on ships with civilians as acts of terrorism. They also were upset about the content of the Zimmerman Telegram. Once war was declared, there was a lot of support on the home front from Americans buying war bonds, enlisting in the armed forces, and women working in factories.

Q

Write a paragraph explaining why the entry of the United States into World War I was a turning point for the Allied forces. Consider the effect of Russia leaving the war and how the American troops made a difference.

A

Russia exiting the war meant that Germany only had to focus their war efforts on one military front—the Western Front. The troops from France, Britain, and Italy were already weary from the two-front war. When the Americans joined on the Western Front, they added numbers to the existing troops as well as supplies and experienced military leadership. This rejuvenated the Allied powers.

Q

Evaluate the pros and cons of U.S. participation in international organizations. Write a paragraph evaluating the arguments for and against the League of Nations. Consider the view of the opponents as well as supporters of the League of Nations.

A

Those who supported the League of Nations did so because they believed that a collaborative group of nations could lead to peace in the world. They believed that this large organization could strengthen U.S. alliances, and would help the United States have a voice in world affairs. Those who opposed the League of Nations held fast to the belief that the United States should stay out of world affairs and not build such alliances. They believed that this organization wouldn’t have any real power or authority to solve the world’s problems.
